Savio, Netto and Blacky hung out at the junction near Nair Union Hostel. Savio had to go to Holy Mary’s as Sister Regina had told him that his sister would call for the first time after reaching Rome. Simon did not want to speak to his daughter because he had nothing much to say. Guilt taunted him and instead of going away, came back to haunt him, even though his daughter was safe in Rome.

In that darkness, as the last crows were squawking without meaning or sense on their way back home, Savio, Blacky and Netto talked about the day of violence and about Abdul Hamid and about Nair Union Hostel. Then, on a whim, Blacky led the way and they went to take one more look at Nair Union, which was now deserted and still except for the gossamer curtains remorselessly spun by the spiders.

As they looked up, all three saw figures moving around in the balcony, their minds and bodies caught in the masturbatory games they had indulged in. They gaped at the balcony and suddenly, the sky became dark and the clouds moved in without notice, without even a fluctuation in the day’s weather or a swaying of the coconut palms.

The crow was there on the balcony, flapping its wings, trying to take off to other dark worlds. Its wide wings beat against the dangerously poised balcony rails but there was no taking off, even after Camel Surendran’s skeleton started breathing, reverberating with the stories that it told to keep itself entertained in the throes of its near-existence.

Thud-thud…

Thud-thud…

Thud-thud, thud-thud.

The sound echoed throughout Puram.
